    • Opportunities and Benefits?
I started taking care of children without a license. My friends were telling me, "If you get your license, you can get more children and better pay." I was eager to do something, but I didn't know where to go or what to do. I had a lot of questions with no answers. Somebody told me about Mrs. De Nevárez and the Bilingual Information and Referral Center (BIRC). I didn't know where her office was, but I knew that she was helping our community. I went over to her house and asked her, "Can I get a Child Care License?" With great enthusiasm, she told me, "Of course you can do it!" I remember that day very well. Her words were, for me, the seal on my passport to success. After 4 months, I received my license for 6 children. I lived in a single mobile home for 5 years. Later, we bought our first house and extended our license for 12. Now I can concentrate on my job and keep going ahead. It has been an advantage to be bilingual. In our community, a lot of people are looking for this service so their children can learn to speak Spanish. - Maria Gonzalez
